Henry Schickerling was born in Johannesburg South Africa and finished his schooling at Linden High School. After graduating with a degree in Commercial Art he went to Cape Town where he studied at the American Fashion Academy for pattern cutting and designing of women's wear.,After completing the course he was offered a position as assistant designer at Hellas - a coat, suit and dress house in Cape Town..
After two years he went to London to study at the famous Tailor and Cutter Academy.He then went to Milan in Italy where he worked with Mila Schon .She was the go to designer for many chic woman of the jet set-especially Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
Later Schickerling worked with Pino Lancetti in Rome as well.

After three years in Italy he returned to South Africa to open his own studio in Johannesburg. Here he became a founder member of the South African Couture Syndicate with other designers like Chris Levin ,Peter Soldatos. Marianne Fassler, Rena Boutolos, Errol Arendz, Marc Bouwer. Mina Feinstein, Margaret Heymann, Elsbetha Rosenwerth and Eric Pugin of Derber's.
Among many of the society ladies of South Africa he also dressed Barbara Barnard :- the wife of Dr. Chris Barnard who did the first hear transplant in the world and Mrs. Marga Diederichs the President of South Africa's wife.
After nine years in South Africa he was offered a position with an Italian Designer Danzante in New York City who promised to sponsor him for his American citizenship. After completing the three year contract he started a small operation working with wealthy Orthodox Jewish women in New York. Because of religious requirements these women needed very glamorous ,but modest gowns with long sleeves and high necks.His standing with this religious community has lasted for almost thirty years and has dressed the grandmothers,mothers,daughters and granddaughters of some of these families.
In 2001 Schickerling met Marion Milenovic who was connected with Oscar de la Renta for almost twenty years. They decided to join forces and founded Tosca New York a year later.
Up to date they have dressed many of the most elegant fashion elite of New York and America. Working with Saks Fifth Avenue and doing trunk show for them all over the country had been very successful. When a special outfit was needed by an Arabian Princess or celebrity Tosca New York was called on when the store could not fill the need.It has been a successful collaboration up to this day.
Among their customers singers like Aretha Franklin.Leslie Uggams. Renee Fleming, Susan Graham, Pretty Yende.
Many of the diplomatic corps as well as a personal friend of Queen Elizabeth who was dressed for two Royal weddings as well as many gowns for her annual visits to Windsor Castle and Ascot .
For the Bush Inauguration the Governor's wife Libby Pataki was dressed by Tosca New York as well as for her husbands inaugural as Governor of New York .A pregnant diplomatic wife also wore Tosca to the Obama White House. Mrs Colin Powell and Mrs. George Schultz also wore Tosca New York in Washington DC and San Francisco. Tosca New York have an international clientele with women wearing their designs all over the world-from Riyadh to Prague.

In 2001 Marion Milenovic and Schickerling started TOSCA NEW YORK to design and produce custom made day and evening wear. Before then Ms. Milenovic was affiliated with Oscar de la Renta for almost twenty years.The formed a very successful partnership that lasted almost twenty years.

Ms Fleming is one of the most celebrated and prominent sopranos of the 21st century. She will be wearing two creations during her concerts, designed by the South African fashion designer, Henry Schickerling, who has been living in New York for the past 27 years. He is a regular designer for opera stars.
